Frequently Asked Questions

Placenta encapsulation questions? I’m always happy to chat — just drop me a message on WhatsApp or email ellen@theplacentaconnection.co.uk

What types of encapsulation are available?

I offer two methods of encapsulation — and choosing between them is simply about what feels right for you:

Simple Capsules — your placenta is prepared and dehydrated from raw. Evidence suggests more nutrients are retained this way, and mothers most commonly report increased energy levels, faster healing and a strong milk supply.

Steamed Capsules — your placenta is gently steamed before dehydrating. This method typically yields slightly fewer capsules, and mothers report a greater feeling of calm, balance and emotional steadiness.

50/50 Capsules — can’t decide? Half your placenta is prepared by each method, giving you the full spectrum of benefits. This is the option I chose myself after my own birth.

Not sure which is right for you? I’m happy to talk it through before you book.

Can I have my placenta encapsulated if I am having a water birth or c-section?

Absolutely — both are completely straightforward.

For a water birth, your placenta simply needs to be delivered onto dry land (a towel or inco pad works perfectly) to prevent any cross contamination in the water. Your midwife will be familiar with this.

For a c-section, the process is exactly the same as after a vaginal delivery — nothing changes at all.

Can I have my placenta encapsulated if I am taking medication?

In most cases, yes. The majority of medications that are safe to take during pregnancy pose no problems for placenta encapsulation. I simply ask that you discuss this with your midwife or doctor before going ahead, so you can make a fully informed decision.

If you’re unsure, feel free to contact me before booking and I can help guide you.

Will the hospital let me keep my placenta?

Yes — your placenta is legally your property and you are fully entitled to keep it for encapsulation.

In very rare circumstances a hospital may need to retain the placenta for testing — for example in the case of a placental infection — but this is uncommon. I’m happy to advise on how to communicate your wishes to your midwifery team before your birth.

What happens after I book?

Here’s exactly what to expect:

At around 37 weeks — I’ll deliver a chiller pack to you containing everything you need and full instructions for safe placenta storage after your birth.

When you go into labour — let me know, at any time of day or night.

After your baby arrives — contact me as soon as you can. I aim to collect your placenta within 12 hours of hearing from you — and it’s usually much sooner than that.

Within 48 hours — your capsules will be ready and returned to you.

Please note: some hospitals require the attendance of a Human Tissue Authority licensed courier for collection. I’ll advise you on this based on your hospital at the time of booking.

Do you collect from my hospital?

I collect free of charge from:

  • Medway Hospital
  • Darent Valley Hospital
  • Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington

For all other locations a specialist courier fee applies — please see the services page for full details or contact me for a quote specific to your postcode.
